Although some of the smaller manufacturers are beginning to account for a substantial portion of the notebook market, the respected brands of HP, Lenovo (IBM), Toshiba, Dell and Acer are still the brands of laptop computer people are turning to.
Popular laptop computer models
Most of the major notebook manufacturers have models for less than $2000, suitable for the average user. These generally come with Windows XP installed as standard. Examples include:
- HP nx6125 (ER667PA) (from $1030)
The basic laptop comes with a 1.8GHz processor; 15 inch screen; 40GB hard drive; 256MB RAM (memory); DVD CD-RW combo and high speed modem. Other models are available which include a larger hard drive and more RAM, among other things.
- Asus A6010U (around $1350)
Excellent value, including a 1.8GHz processor; 15 inch screen; 60GB hard drive; 512MB Ram; DVD burner and in-built web camera.
- Dell Inspiron 6400UMA (around $1400)
This Dell laptop computer is one of the most affordable laptop computers around and includes a 1.66GHz processor; 60GB hard drive; 512MB RAM and 15.4 inch screen. It also includes a DVD burner as standard. Upgrades are available for extra cost.
- Sony VAIO VGNFJ56G (around $1500)
Comes with Windows XP Home; 1.4GHz processor; 14 inch screen; 40GB hard drive; 256MB Ram and DVD CD-RW combo.
- Samsung R45 intel Centrino 740 (around $1700)
A perfect family laptop computer including a 1.73GHz processor; 15 inch screen; 60GB hard drive; 512MB Ram and a DVD/CD-RW combo.
- Fujitsu LBS7020D ($1600 - $2000))
Very attractive laptop including a 1.4GHz processor; 14 inch screen; 40GB hard drive; 512MB Ram; combo DVD/CD drive and modem.
- Toshiba Tecra A3X P-M 740 (around $2000)
Toshiba Tecra laptops are designed as a mobile replacement for standard desktop computers. The A3X P-M 740 has a 1.73GHz processor; 15 inch display; 60GB hard drive; 512MB RAM and a DVD/CD combo.
